Enhanced life test method for titanium electrode test method

February 24, 2022

Working life is an important parameter to measure the performance of coated titanium anodes.

The RuIrTi coated electrode provided by Professor Bianchi in Italy has a rapid oxygen release life of 60h at 100A/dm2 and 0.5mol/LH2SO4, and a chlorine release life of 2300h when electrolyzed in salt water.

Ni Huizu (Studied the Ir interlayer, RuIrTi coating electrode in 100A/dm2, 0.5mol/LH2SO4 rapid oxygen release life is 470h, reference Bianchi data, the chlorine release life is 18017h(2300*470/60≈18017)

Chen Kangning provided a test data, ruthenium-titanium coating titanium anode at 0.5mol/L rapid oxygen release life of more than 800min, in saturated sodium chloride solution 15-20A/dm2, the working life of about 5 years.

The authors provide a data that the service life of coated titanium anode in chlor-alkali production can reach more than 8 years when the strengthening life is 4000min in 1mol/LH2SO4 at 1A/cm2.

When studying the new coating formulation, because the actual operation life of titanium anodes is very long, often in a few months, or even more than a few years, it is impossible to wait until the anodic operation passivation, before obtaining a working life data. Scholars all over the world are using the internationally universal enhanced life test, also known as the fast life test, that is, in the high current density, harsh electrolytic medium to strengthen the operation, the passivation time is called enhanced (fast) operation life, it can qualitatively judge the development of coated titanium anode actual working life.

IrTa oxide coating is recognized as the best oxygen evolution coating, which can achieve the best electrocatalytic activity and electrochemical stability. In the study of IrTa coating, no. 92 test sheet was electrolyzed continuously at 1mol/L H2SO4 and 40 degrees 4A/cm2 for 2928.5h(i.e. 122 days), and the accumulative current reached 11.7x104A/h/cm2.

However, the accumulated power is related to the amount of iridium metal (Ir) used in the coating, that is, the large amount of Ir coating, long strengthening life, and the accumulated power. Therefore, the authors propose a new concept to measure electrode performance and economy comprehensively using standard reinforcement life. Strengthening life (quick life) test, the cumulative power of unit area is converted to 1g(Ir)/m2 coated amount of life, that is, the standard strengthening life, the unit is 104A·h/g(Ir). In our study of low Ir coating (less than 10g/m2), the standard enhanced life of no.23 sample was 327.87* 104a. h/g Ir loss was 0.3μg/(A·h).
